Hier eine aktuelle Übersicht über die verwendeten MPEG-4 Standards innerhalb des Flash Media Servers und des neuen Flash Players 9.0.115:

Supported file formats:

All editions of Flash Media Server 3 support playback of the following file formats:

FLV All versions of Flash Media Server (1, 2, and 3) support the FLV file format. The FLV file format supports the ollowing codecs: On2 VP6, Sorenson Spark, and MP3.
To create FLV files from existing digital video or audio files, use third-party video encoding utilities, like On2 or orenson Squeeze, or export them from Flash. Recorded streams can contain data messages, as well as video and udio and are stored in the FLV file format.
F4V, MP4, M4A, MOV, MP4V, 3GP, and 3G2 Flash Media Server 3 supports playback of H.264-encoded video and AC-encoded audio within MPEG-4 Part 14 container formats.

Important: If a file contains portions of audio and video not encoded using H.264 and AAC, those parts of the stream will not play. For more information on H.264/AAC support, see Exploring Flash Player support for high-definition H.264 video and AAC audio.

Seit heute steht auf labs.adobe.com das neueste Prerelease des Adobe Media Players zur Verfügung. Der Adobe Media Player ist ein standalone Player auf Basis von AIR und wird gegen den Microsoft Media Player positioniert. Neu in der aktuellen Version ist:

• H.264 and HE-AAC support—view high-quality video encoded with the H.264 video and HE-AAC audio codecs.
• Hardware accelerated full screen support—play back full-screen videos with improved performance on Windows® and Macintosh® computers.
• More control over your viewing experience—new video scaling options (full window/full screen, actual size, scale up), keyboard controls (play, pause, fast forward, rewind), and a resume play option that starts playback where you last stopped the video.
• Customize your environment—the Options area allow you to set your Adobe Media Player preferences, along with new episode default settings that govern playback of newly downloaded shows.
• Catalog search—quickly and easily find the shows you want to see using keywords or tags.
• Continuous play of new episodes—have your own marathon of all the episodes of your favorite show with only one click on the play button.
• Content Status Indicators—quickly see the status of each episode of your favorite show, whether it is being downloaded or streamed, and if you’ve watched it or not.

*Staun* … was es nicht so alles gibt. Unter www.haxevideo.org ist nun ein weiterer Open Source Flash Video (FLV) Streaming Server zur Verfügung gestellt worden.

HaXe selbst ist ein skriptsprache mit Compiler für Webanwendungen und in eben dieser ist der haXe Streaming Server geschrieben worden. Der gesamte haXe Streaming Server liegt auch im Quellcode vor (ist gar nicht viel ca. 50 KB) und man kann selbst schauen, wie das von Adobe bisher nicht freigegebene RTMP Protokoll reengineered wurde.

Insofern ist dieser Server wirklich nett, ob sich die Internas mal anzuschauen, aber ob er in der Praxis wirklich eine Rolle spielen wird, wage ich eher zu bezweifeln, da aufgrund der letzten Preissenkungen des Flash Media Servers der Preis zumindest in Business-Projekten keine Rolle mehr spielen dürfte.

Ups, da habe ich doch eine wichtig Sache erst jetzt mitbekommen:

Bisher ist der Sound in den FLV Dateien in der Regel mit dem NellyMoser ASAO Codec encodiert. Dieser ist bisher leider eine Blackbox gewesen, über die es so gut wie keine Infomationen gab.

Seit dem 15. Oktober ist nun aber in FFmeg endlich die Möglichkeit enthalten, FLVs mit Sound im NellyMoser Format in andere Formate umzuwandeln.

Mit dem neuesten Flash Player 9.115 können nun Videos mit dem H.264 Codec in HQ-Qualität abgespielt werden. In der neuen HD Video Gallerie auf der Adobe WebSite sind richtig coole Trailer in unterschiedlichsten Auflösungen vorhanden (480p, 720p und 1080p), damit man zum einen mächtig beeindruckt ist und zum anderen mal die Unterschiede sieht.

Der Flash Media Server 3 unterstützt auch Live Streaming mit dem H.264 Codec. Nur wie erzeugt man einen solchen Live Stream mit dem H.264 Codec? Im Augenblick gar nicht, denn Adobe arbeitet noch daran

Erst die nächste Version des Flash Media Encoders wird neben dem On2 Codec auf den H.264 Codec unterstützen, so dass dann Live Streams auch in HD-Qualität möglich sind.

Leider bring das für all die netten Community-Anwendungen (wie z.B. www.ligx.de oder www.webzooms.tv), die direkt im Flash Player eine WebCam ansteuern, gar nichts, denn dort wird die Video Encodierung innerhalb des Flash Players durchgeführt … und der Flash Player (Version 6,7,8,9) encodiert Videos nur mit dem Sorenson Codec und den Sound mit dem NellyMoser Codec. Bitte die Encodierung nicht mit der Decodierung verwechseln … hier ist die aktuelle Tabelle der unterstützten Formate bei der Video / Sound Decodierung:

Übrigens, seit der Version 1.02 des Flash Media Encoders gibt es die Möglichkeit, in der custom.ini Datei einen Parameter zu setzen, der bei der o.g. Fehlermeldung Abhilfe schaft. Mit ENABLE_VMR=off schaltet man die Verwendung von VMR ab, so dass es dann i.d.R. funktionieren sollte.

“FME does not work with the display graphic cards which does not support VMR. The display graphic card on the older machines are known to be not VMR compliant. All the newer machines are VMR compliant. This might be the reason FME is seen to be working on some machine and not on others.”

“Graphics Cards with Overlay disabled (not supporting VMR) were not detected by FME owing to which FME used to give an error message “Problems with Video Capture Card”. The Fix allows a user to disable the VMR route by changing “ENABLE_VMR=off” in the custom.ini file that is installed

Ganz still und heimlich kam übrigens der Flash Media Encoder 2.0 (und gerade habe ich gemerkt, das die Version 2.0.1 schon da ist … ).

In der brandneuen Version 2.0.1 ist übrigens dieser Bug behoben:  Application hangs up after approx 30 minute of encoding (# 1628860), … dass läßt doch darauf schliessen, dann man die 2.0 Version gar nicht richtig einsetzen konnte, oder?

 Neuerungen der Version 2.0:

• Command-line options: Use command-line options to run encoding sessions via scripts or from a command prompt.
• MP3: support Encode audio in either MP3 or Nellymoser format. For MP3 format, you can also choose the number
  of channels (mono or stereo).
• Timecode support: when using a device that can generate timecodes, embed an SMPTE timecode in the video
  stream.
• Features for enabling 24/7 broadcasts: several settings and command-line parameters make it easy to run encoding
  sessions continuously. Create scripts and integrate them with your existing automated systems.
• Support for remote access Access: Flash Media Encoder—in both GUI and command-line mode—via Microsoft®
  Remote Desktop Connection or RealVNC™.

Insbesondere für die Kommandozeilen Option bin ich persönlich sehr dankbar, da dieses von einigen unserer Kunden immer wieder gefordert wurde.

Sorenson hat just die neue Squeeze Version 4.8 released. Mit dieser neuen Version wird jetzt auch der neue H.264 Codec unterstützt, der im neuen Flash Player 9.0.155 und dem upcoming Flash Media Server 3 verfügbar ist.

Ausserdem werben Sie mit “Up to 3x speed boost while encoding and preprocessing” … da bin ich mal gespannt, ob das in der realität stimmt.
