Die aktuelle Flash Media Server 4.5 Interactive Edition erlaubt nun auch bis zu 500 RTMFP Connections. Braucht man mehr, kann man entweder die unlimitierte Enterprise Edition kaufen … oder man kombiniert 2 oder mehrere Interactive Edition Lizenzen (License stacking) und erhöht so für “kleines” Geld die Anzahl der RTMFP Connections in 500er Blöcken.

Hier ein Auszug aus einem Chat mit Adobe Ingenieuren zum Thema UDP Ports:

Question: Companies often ask me what they need to do to their firewall to allow Peer-Assist to work from our Cloud-based service through their firewall. I usually say they need to open port 1935 for UDP and ports 19350-65535 for UDP. Is this correct?

Answer: They need to allow UDP outbound on any port for P2P to work. When clients open direct connections to neighbors in the Group, these will happen over random UDP ports (whatever port number the kernel doles out when the client opened its socket).

Standardmäßig verwendet ein Client den Port 1935 und die Ports 19350-65535 um mit dem Flash Media Server über das RTMFP Protokoll zu kommunizieren. RTMPF kommuniziert dabei ausschließlich über UDP. Clients konnektieren zum Server über Port 1935 und der Server redirects den Client zu einem Port zwischen 19350 und 65535.

Bisher dachten alle und ich auch … dass das neue RTMFP Protokoll nur in der Flash Media Server 4 Enterprise Edition nutzbar ist … stimmt nicht so ganz …

In der Übersicht der Editionen unter http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/compare/  steht unter “RTMFP unicast” ein Haken bei der Interactive Edition.  Somit geht das RTMFP Protokoll auch inter der Interactive Edition aber nur im Unicast Modus … also nix P2P.

Hier die Begründung von Kevin Towes, dem Adobe Produkt Manager:

“The reason we put RTMFP in unicast mode into the interactive server, is to all the same types of applications you have today to be run over UDP, vs TCP.   Key benefit is lower latency for interactive applications.  You can also use RTMFP to stream video, however there will be a performance hit due to the encryption in RTMFP.”

und

“RTMFP in unicast mode enables communication over UDP vs. TCP, to help reduce latency for communication applications. All p2p functions are limited to the Development Server (50 peers), and the Enterprise Server (unlimited Peers). “
